Urgent Request for the Friends of the Bourne Rail Trail

The hard work has continued to make the Bourne Rail Trail a reality. Amazingly, $20 million of federal funding has been generously made available through the Cape Cod Regional Transfer Authority that should cover most if not all the basic cost of construction of a rail-to-trail pathway! The funding is dependent only on removal of the Falmouth Secondary rail line, but time is running short to take advantage of this opportunity. Please help us convince our elected officials that the public interest in a pedestrian and bicycle trail far outweighs the limited benefits of the relatively little used Falmouth Secondary rail line. Please let Governor Maura Healey, and one or more of the officials listed above, know of your strong support for removal of the Falmouth Secondary rail line and construction on the rail bed of the Bourne Rail Trail. This can be done by sending an email (or calling or writing a letter). Feel free to create your own message or, if you prefer, just copy and paste the sample message shown below.

Thank you for your help. Time is of the essence as our opponents are actively working on ways to ensure the track is retained.

The Board of the Friends of the Bourne Rail Trail

Here is the sample message for you to copy and paste, if you’d like to use it:

I am writing in strong support of the removal of the Falmouth Secondary rail line, so that we can take advantage of $20 million of federal funding provided through the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority and committed to the construction of the Bourne Rail Trail. The Bourne Rail Trail will be a pedestrian and bicycle pathway connecting the already existing Cape Cod Canal Pathway and Shining Sea Bikeway. The funding is dependent only on removal of the little-used Falmouth Secondary rail line so that we can take a rail-to-trail approach to creation of the BRT. The public interest in this important connector pedestrian and bicycle pathway far outweighs the very limited use of the Falmouth Secondary by a private, for profit rail operator and its lessee, a private, for profit trash disposal company. Please use your influence to direct the removal of the Falmouth Secondary as soon as possible, so that we can realize the amazing benefit of federal funding to construct this important Cape Cod project.

Thank you,
